Networking Two Remote Computers

My friend and I have been wondering if it is possible to create a network
between our home computers.

Currently, we each subscribe to (different) DSL ISPs. I'm running XP Pro
and she's running XP Home.

We've learned how to use the Remote Assistance feature and had lots of fun
with that, but we'd like to create some sort of "connection" that might allow
our computers to work together or share partial access of software/hardware.

We've been reading, and re-reading, the standared HELP topics for
networking, but haven't gotten much insight. Any help would be appreciated!
