networking problem

hooked up laptop at college into ethernet port, but it
doesn't work. icon in toolbar shows its connected; status
shows its sending, but receiving stays "0". ping;ed
internal 127.0.0.1 --OK; pinged external IP address - no
go; set-up for auto IP address, looks to be configured
OK....any ideas??...classes start this week

Please start with ipconfig information.
Start - Run - "cmd". Type "ipconfig /all >c:\ipconfig.txt" into the command
window - Open c:\ipconfig.txt in Notepad, copy and paste into your next post.
Identify operating system (by name and version).
