OK I need help. I have been trying to network my daughters laptop (runs98SE)
and my home PC (runsXP Pro) for about 4 weeks and I'm not getting anywhere.
The laptop as a 3Com Etherlink III LAN=33.6Modem PC Card and the PC has a
Realtek RTL8139/810x Family Fast Ethernet NIC (connected to a WebStar cable
modem) and a Netgear FA31 Fast Ethernet Adapter (connected by a crossover
cable to the laptop). Both devices are working correctly and there are no
conflicts. I have run the network wizard on both systems and they appear to
be talking to each other. I have the shared and firewalled the Realtek card
and turned on internet connection sharing. I can ping the pc from the laptop
but not the other way round. I can't see the other machine in my network
window on both systems. I have enabled sharing on both machines hard drives.
If I search for computers and type in the PC's name on the laptop it finds it
and allows me to create a shortcut to it so I can browse all the files on the
PC's hard drive. If I search for computers on the PC it doesn't find the
laptop. Any help at all would be really appreciated or any pointers to
websites where I could find a step by step guide for idiots like me. The
laptop has nearly gone through the window on several occasions but so far I
have restrained myself. At first it wasn't working at all so I am at least
progressing. All this is so I can run windows updates on the laptop and she
can access her favourite games sites without having to kick me off mine.
Thanks in advance for any help and I apologise for the length of this.

Andy,

Please ping the laptop from the PC, by name AND by ip address, and report the
exact text of errors.

Please provide ipconfig information for each computer.
Start - Run - "cmd". Type "ipconfig /all >c:\ipconfig.txt" into the command
window - Open c:\ipconfig.txt in Notepad, copy and paste into your next post.
Identify operating system (by name and version) with each ipconfig listing.

From each computer, test shares visibility (use actual name / address of each
computer as appropriate):
Start - Run then:
1) \\ThisComputerByName
2) \\ThisComputerByIPAddress
3) \\OtherComputerByName
4) \\OtherComputerByIPAddress
Report visibility of shares / error displayed in each test (8 tests total).

Cheers,
Chuck
