If there is a different NG to post this to please let me know..
I recently installed a wireless router on my XP machine, and a PCI
adapter card into a machine running 98se. I used the install disks for
both, went to the website and set all settings and connected to the
internet on both machines. This went extremely well.
Now the problem.
1) I ran the setup wizard for XP, made a disc, ran the wizard on the
98 machine. No Joy, the machines cannot see each other.
2) I then went on the internet and found some info on networking and
made several attempts to make it work. Still nothing.
3) Tonight was working on it again, and in the 98 properties for the
wireless adapter I changed the settings from assign ip automatically
to select ip address. I put in the numbers from the set up and voila,
the two computers can now see each other, transfer files and
print..awesome I thought. I now cannot connect to the internet..
If I go back, change settings to select ip automatically I can use
internet, but no network. Anyone know anything about this..PLEASE.
In the 98 connections i have the following list.
Client for MS Networks
Microsoft family logon
Dlink wireless pci card
netbeui-sis fast ethernet adapter
tcp/ip-dlink wireless adapter(the one i'm trying to set up)
file and printer sharing for ms networks

The primary logon is set at Microsoft family logon, but can select
client for ms networks with no diff except asks for password.

Make sure the 'Family logon' is not bonded to to Client
for MS networks, but that the Client for ms networks is
bonded to the outgoing NIC for internet service (sis fast
ethernet). The Dlink wireles , I am guessing, is the Home
networking link and should be bonded to family logon , but
not to tcp/ip. The tcp/ip should be routed through th
ethernet link to your broadband modem.

Have assigned an IP address for the default gateway on the win98 PC
? it will be the same as the the router's address.
You should have something like this depending on your router's
address
IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.10
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1
DHCP Server . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1 [router]

Dissable the SIS adapter in BIOS Setup if it is an on-board device,
or remove the PCI card, turn off netbeui and family logon can you
browse the network now ?.

Thanks for the response, I have put in the addresses as you listed,
this is when I am able to network the two computers. When I do this
however the 98 machine will not then connect to the internet, but the
xp machine still will.

I have disabled the sis ethernet adapter, but am not sure as to how to
turn off netbeui.

Also DNS, and WINS are set to disabled.

those IP addresses were only mean to illustrate my point about the
default gateway, you will have to consult your router's manual to
find it's true IP address.
To remove netbeui from the list of protocols, highlight it and hit
the delete key, all you need on the Win98 box are :

Client for MS Networks
File and Print Sharing for MS Networks
TCP/IP

Bind you NIC to TCP, but don't bind file and print sharing
also you might want to enable netBIOS over TCP since you are using
static IPs.
Next run ipconfig /all [start > run > command] to check all the
address's match.

You da man, Roberto...all up and running now. I knew those addresses
were just examples though..lol. I cleared out all of the network stuff
as you suggested and now everything is great. Thanks a million.
