Networking Ping Crossover cable problems

I have a desktop pc and a laptop both running windows XP. I recently
purchased a crossover cable in an attempt to network the two to share
an internet connection. Both computers ping with themselves but fail to
ping with one another.
Ive done the whole firewall thing (disable them both) and that didnt
work and ive also tried manually configuring the IP Addresses but that
didnt work either. Im kind of running out of options now so im open to
any suggestions how big or small they may be.
One final thing is that the LAN connection needed repairing and it was
the ARP cache that needed clearing i did that on the C:\ manually and
there were no files there yet it still believes on network connections
that it needs clearing, thats on both desktop pc and laptop.
If anymore information is required i can provide i just dont know
whether its needed.
Thanks

Then let's look at "ipconfig /all" from both computers.
