Networking not starting correctly after system reboot

Hello,

We have an inportant database running on a Windows 2000
Advanced Server.

When we reboot the server the networking components do not
work correctly, we have to disable the network card and
then re-enable it to make the network come to life, once
it has been re-enabled it works without a problem until
the next system re-boot.

We have changed nothing recently on our Windows 2000
Advanced Server, the last change was to apply the service
pack four which was applied months ago, this issue has
only been seen in the last couple of weeks. Prior to this
the server has performed without issue for 3 years.

Due to an issue with the database we have to perform a
reboot every night to allow a cold backup to take place,
because the reboot takes place before the backup this
means that the backup does not work and our users can not
use the database until the network card has been disabled
then re-enabled.

If anybody has any ideas what could be going on I would be
grateful.

thanks in advance

Chris

Database systems are designed to make a backup of thier own database
themselves while "live" and save it to a location somewhere. The scheduled
backup then backs up this "copy" instead of the "live" one. Therefore no
rebooting of the machine is required. This is the pattern and method you
should follow, even if the machine wasn't having issues.

I'm not sure why the networking components are failing as they are. Are
there any Event Log entries that indicate anything?
