Networking Nightmare

I have been trolling this newsgroup hoping to find an answer to my problem.
I recently built a new system and installed XP Pro and attempted to join the
workgroup that already existed on my network. Obviously I have not been
successful.

The network consists of computer John running XP Pro with all updates and
computer Jeanne running XP Home with all updates. They are hard wired (ie
ethernet) to a Microsoft wireless router. Both computers have access to the
internet. Both computers heve Trend-micro Internet security suite with a
firewall configured to allow home networking.

The problem is that while computer Jeanne can see and access all shared file
on John, John can see Jeanne but cannot access any shared files. I have
tried all types of combinations and permutations of the excellant advice
offered here but nothing works. I don't believe that it is a firewall
problem as I have tried everything with the firewall boyj on and off. I have
also made sure that the Windows fireall was off.

I have run Browstat and ipconfig on both machines and are inclucing them
here.

When you say that John can see Jeanne - do you mean:

1. John can ping Jeanne by IP address
2. John can ping Jeanne by the name 'jeanne'

Make sure that either the users on both computers use the same username &
password, or that you create identical usernames/passwords on both.

Then try

\\jeanne

and see whether you can browse....if not, can you blind map a drive?

net use x: \\jeanne\c$ (or whatever share name you set up on that PC) ?

When I said that John can see jeanne, I meant in network neighborhood.

John cannot ping jeanne either by name or IP address both timed out.
Both computers have identical names and passwords.

\\jeanne does not work, cannot browse.

net use came back with a system error 85 "The local drive is already in
use."

John cannot ping jeanne either by name or IP address both timed out.

Then it sounds like a firewall issue, honestly, although you've said you
ruled that out.

The IP address from John is 192.168.2.2, subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 - what
is it on Jeanne?

Make sure NetBIOS over TCP/IP is enabled on Jeanne, and that the computer
browser service is started. Once you can ping by IP, that is.

Both computers have identical names and passwords.

\\jeanne does not work, cannot browse.

net use came back with a system error 85 "The local drive is already
in use."

Well, don't use X, then - that was just my example. :)

But browsing and mapping drives won't work at all if you can't even ping by
IP.

How did you rule out the firewall. The firewalls I've seen in the past when
you disable them part of the firewall still runs in the background and can
cause problems. The only way round that was to uninstall the firewall, see
if the problem is sorted then reinstall. Also have a lok at your antivirus
as some newer ones have a part that acts like a firewall and blocks incoming
connections. On Norton AV for instance the internet worm protection blocks
incoming connections. So I disable it when troubleshooting. Check your AV.
