I have recently purchased a Windows Media Center PC that I am connecting to a
wired network that also contains an Xbox, through a D-link router that is
connected to an Earthlink DSL service.

I have the Xbox connecting to Xbox live just fine and the PC connects to the
web just fine with the router setup in DHCP mode and the Xbox and PC using
auto IP. The problem is I cannot get my PC and Xbox to communicate well.

I've been attempting to set my PC and xbox with static IP addresses and set
my router into PPPoe mode with flaky results.

I really could use some advice on the correct settings that will allow me to
set up my Media Center appropriately. I guess I'm struggling to understand
if I need to set the static IP address in both my PC and Xbox as well as in
the router setup. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Greg,

Please define "cannot get my PC and Xbox to communicate well". Do you mean
won't communicate at all? Or what won't they do, and what else will they do?

One of the most common causes of most problems like this would be a
misconfigured or overlooked personal firewall, but there are other possibilities
too. What antivirus protection do you use? Read this article with an open
mind:

http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/10/irregularities-in-workgroup-visibility.html

If no help yet, provide "browstat status" and "ipconfig /all" from the MCE
computer, and "ipconfig /all" from the Xbox, so we can diagnose the problem.
Read this article, and linked articles, and follow instructions precisely:

When I attempt to setup Media Center I get a "cannot connect" error.
Furthermore, if I attempt to ping my xbox, I get no response.

I will dig through your documents below to see if they help.
I'm beginning to wonder if there is some kind of port forwarding that I need
to set up in my router to allow my PC to connect to my Xbox. I find it odd
that the documentation wouldn't tell me anything along those lines though.

Greg,

Most D-Link routers (model # would help here) have NAT, and maybe a portion of a
firewall, protecting the LAN from the WAN (internet). The LAN side is simply a
switch. There are no router settings that affect access of computers on the
LAN, to each other.

I'll give you a better document to peruse:

This is actually the part I'm having trouble with. I have no problems with
my xbox connecting to the net or my PC connecting to the net. It's getting
my Xbox and PC to communicate and setup the Media Center Extender that is no
longer working.

That's fine. Your symptoms are not unknown, just read the articles, or provide
the requested diagnostics so we can see what to look at next. Help us to help
you.

Greg,
# Did you download browstat.exe?
# What folder did you copy browstat.exe into?

I'll check ipconfig logs, but browstat logs are really useful here.
