My kid wanted to watch some movies on her computer upstairs from my
computer through our home network.

The movies were a little off synch on her computer so i decided to try
uninstalling her video card which is a fairly old one and try her onboard
video which is more up to date.

After uninstalling the card and hooking up the monitor to the on board vid
,, i lost all connection to the network ,,, and have not been able to get
it back.

I've tried everything ,, re-sharing my folders ,, running the network
wizard etc but to no avail.

She's able to access the 'net through the network ,, but not access any
computers on it.

I can't see her computer on the network from my computer ,, but i can see
her sister's computer.

Any suggestions for me to try that maybe i've overlooked. I've even tried a
repair of Windows thinking that maybe i screwed a file up or something.

Any help is greatly appreciated ,, i don't think i can stand sitting
through another Gilmore Girls episode from my computer.

Thanks ,, Gord

Wizards are a wonderful thing, same as all these automated things
you've got in your car, but if the engine refuses to start when you
turn the key then it's time to look under the bonnet. This is exactly
what's needed here. Do this on each PC:

- Click Start / Run
- Type cmd {OK}
- Type these commands verbatim:
echo PC=%ComputerName% User=%UserName% >c:\test.txt {Enter}
net user >> c:\test.txt {Enter}
net share >> c:\test.txt {Enter}
ipconfig /all >> c:\test.txt {Enter}
notepad c:\test.txt {Enter}
- Paste the contents of c:\test.txt from each PC into your reply.

Use a floppy disk if necessary to carry the file from one PC
to the other.

Perhaps I can provide some checklist after you have going through all the
examines.
1. IP set or is it DHCP? (Anyway, just to check)
2. Workgroup matches?
3. Firewall on/off?

I don't think I can think of other things except from your written scenario
I can tell something like "video driver (on-board) clashes with network
driver" or alike.

Repair your "," key first.

Yes, I can, it tells me lots of things about your setup. You have three PCs:
- Gordo
- SARAH-R57754A9N
- Jenn

In your origninal post you mentioned that you were unable to reach
some machines from some of the other machines. There is now a
need to be more specific: Which machine can you reach from which
machine, and which ones can't you reach?

From Gordo i can reach Sarah
From Sarah i can reach Gordo
Jenn can't be read by either Gordo or Sarah

This sounds like a firewall problem on Jenn. I recommend you
turn it off during testing, then tune it to suit your requirements.
You can do this via the Control Panel / Security.

The only firewall is the hardware one ,router ,,and xp's ,, i've disabled
the firewall and even shut off the service while i played around to get
the network up ,,, nada ,,,, the odd thing is , like i said in my first
post ,, all i did was switch to the onboard video and took out the older
video pci card ,,,, how could doing this botch up the connection???

This is getting very frustrating

If you're absolutely convinced that you have no firewall enabled
on Jenn then we need to do some basic tests on Jenn.

1. Click Start / Run
2. Type cmd {OK} (this is called the "Command Prompt").
3. Type these commands:
ping gordo > c:\test.txt
ping 192.168.0.7 >> c:\test.txt
net use q: \\gordo\SharedDocs 1>>c:\test.txt 2>c:\test.err
net use r: \\192.168.0.7\SharedDocs 1>>c:\test.txt 2>>c:\test.err
net use >> c:\test.txt
net view >> c:\test.txt
ipconfig /all >> test.txt

It seems you made a mistake when typing the commands I gave you.
Here they are again. Copy and paste them into c:\test.bat, then
type c:\test.bat at the Command Prompt and repost
the two log files.

ping gordo > c:\test.txt
ping 192.168.0.7 >> c:\test.txt

It seems you made a mistake when typing the commands I gave you.
Here they are again. Copy and paste them into c:\test.bat, then
type c:\test.bat at the Command Prompt and repost
the two log files.

@echo off
ping gordo > c:\test.txt
ping 192.168.0.7 >> c:\test.txt
net use q: \\gordo\SharedDocs 1>>c:\test.txt 2>c:\test.err
net use r: \\192.168.0.7\SharedDocs 1>>c:\test.txt 2>>c:\test.err
net use >> c:\test.txt
net view >> c:\test.txt
ipconfig /all >> test.txt

Ok here it goes again

We're getting closer. Jenn appears to be unable to resolve the
name "gordo" to its current IP address. I do not yet know the
reason for this. I recommend that you now do this on Jenn:

- Start / Run / Control Panel / Networking
- Remove every component under "Local Network", including the adapter.
- Reboot the machine
- Allow it to re-install the various components
- Type these commands under a Command Prompt and report the results:

net use q: \\gordo\SharedDocs
net use r: \\192.168.0.7\SharedDocs
net use
