I am looking for a programme to start and shutdown software on another
computer in my home network which has machines with both W98 and XP
pro on it. I found one (Remote Command) but it only operates with
W2000/Millenium/XP. I can remotely start a programme using the .exe
file but cannot shut it down. Is there a way to do this without
additional software?

You could use remote control software such as vnc and its derivatives.

If that's not what you're looking for, could you clarify your request?
I don't know what you mean by "looking for a programme" combined with
"without additional software". There are a zillion programs called
"Remote Command, which one are you talking about (provide a link).
