network setup problem

Trying to add new PC to home network. Am hard wired to Linksys router. No
problem reaching internet. New machine can't see existing network - "MSHOME
is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network
resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have
access permissions. The list of servers for this workgroup is not currently
available." From the old PC, I can see the new one but can't access it - same
message as above but last sentence is "The network path was not found."
Both machines have 4 users, and at least one of the names is a match.
Firewalls are disabled. simple file sharing is enabled.
This should be simple but I've spent all day trying without success. What's
the cause and the fix?

Clift,

First check to make sure you haven't overlooked any firewalls.

Check registry setting restrictanonymous.

If no help, post "browstat status" and "ipconfig /all" from both computers.

Chuck - you're my hero!

First effort was to look at firewalls and I discovred new PC has norton
installed and running. Turned it off and things are much better. Can see all
networked pcs and shared files from both pcs. Remaining problem - when I use
old PC and try to access new PC, system shows "connecting to old pc" with
UserName grayed out (it's guest, which isn't set up on either machine) and
it's asking for a password, altho I've intentionally not set any. Any easy
solutions?

No problem. Do you have XP Home or Pro on the server (computer that you're
accessing)? If Pro, is Simple File Sharing on or off? Read this article
