Network quits after some amount of time...

OK, I'm SURE the answer to this is lurking out there somewhere but I'm not
finding it...

My setup is 3 Windows 2000 Professional machines that are hardwired to an access
point. This connects to the DSL modem and out to the world.......

This has been working for months... It has worked PERFECTLY for months...

For the last 10 days or so, ONE of the machines loses its connection to the
network, seemingly randomly.... I boot the machine, and it sees the other
systems, shares are shared, and I can fire up IE or whatever and get out to the
Internet. At SOME POINT, generally I find I've lost the connection the next
morning, this machine is no longer receiving packets, continues to SEND packets,
can no longer see the other machines, and can not get out to the internet...

When this happens I can go to one of the other machines and they can still get
out to the network so I presume the problem is NOT the access point or DSL
modem.

I'm running Norton Anti Virus. It reports nothing. I'm also using Zone Alarm.
It reports nothing. I've run spysweeper. IT reports nothing. I've tried some
other spyware locator - same thing - IT REPORTS NOTHING. And I've run Ad-Aware,
and it also reports NOTHING... So, nothing finds any problem, but for the last
10 days or so I've got a box that keeps losing the network connection...

Anybody got an idea?

Dodgy cable
Dodgy NIC
Spyware
Badly configured ZA

Swap cable
Swap NIC
Run a decent spyware remover
make sure the machine and the local network are set up correctly in ZA

Done that...

Haven't done that yet.
Run a decent spyware remover

Can you recommend a different one than Spysweeper? I'm open to just about
anything at this point.
make sure the machine and the local network are set up correctly in ZA

Can you point me in any particular direction in there? I could see having it
wonky and not working at all, but I'm not sure what to do when it works for
several hours, then (as today) when I'm gone for 6 or 7 hours I come back and
the connection is gone... I'll look thru the ZA stuff but I'm not sure what to
look for at this point...

I"ll try swapping the NIC with one of the other machines tonight and see if that
makes any difference...

Thanks for the recommendations...
