network problems

I have had a dell 8100 laptop for several years with no problems and have
used ethernet wired and wifi again with no difficulty. Suddenly the
computer seemed to crash and couldn't be booted up easily (just got a black
screen and was unresponsive). After reinstalling the dell video driver (in
safe mode) the computer began working again except for the internet
connection. I cant get either the wired ethernet or wifi to work at all (no
connection at all). I have reinstalled windows XP and the wireless card
D-Link DWL-650 software with no change. My desktop computer hooked up to
the same network (has dsl modem attached to router) has had no problems. I
have scanned the entire computer with updated norton antivirus - no viruses.
I have not done the SP2 udate. Interestingly, when I look under "view
wireless networks" for the wireless connection, the window that pops up is
all greyed out and my only option is to hit cancel. In addition, I
occassionly see a warning that there is a IP conflict but I do not know how
to investigate this further. There are no apparent device conflicts.
Please help if you can. Thanks.

You said you scanned for viruses, great, what about
spyware?
Disable the adapter and re-enable it right click my
network places, then properties, right click each adapter
and disable then enable again.
Click start/run then type in cmd then hit enter, type in
at the DOS promt, ipconfig, are you getting an ip address,
what is it. Type in at the prompt ping yahoo.com what are
the messages? Have you updated/re-installed your NIC
drivers? Have you installed SP2?
