Network Problems, Ping: YES, Browser: NO

Hi!

I got a similar problem on two different Windows XP Installations:

First machine: I am able to ping and trace IP adresses and to do
nslookups all fine. But in a GUI, like Internet Explorer or any other
browser, no sites are displayed. I already tried the "netsh int ip reset
c:\resetlog.txt" command for reinstallation of the TCP/IP stack, but no
luck. Still the same problem remains.

Second machine: I am able to ping and trace IP adresses of (the correct
and working) nameservers, but cannot do any DNS resolves. nslookup
tells, that the server names cannot be resolved. I didn't try the netsh
command here, yet, because the machine is not at my home. The problems
appeared, as I had AdAware removes loads of spyware from the computer.
According to this site
http://www.umanitoba.ca/academic/faculties/human_ecology/faculty/perchaluk/recent.shtml#adaware
it should work with the netsh command again, but I'd like to be sure
before I hit the hiway to reach that computer.

The first machine had an encounter with some worms and trojans, the
second one with spyware. Of course, I already installed Service Pack 2
on both of the workstations to be a bit more safe in the future. But
anyway, at the moment, there is no working internet connection (using a
browser!) available and I'm going to be quiet desperated.

The person on this page

had a similar problem, but couldn't resolve it, as it seems.

Any hints? I'm quiet sure that everything else in configured properly.

Thanks.

The machines in question standalone workstations, not part of a LAN, so
I can't check this.

Google for both lspfix.exe and winsockxpfix.exe. Both will repair the
TCP/IP stack, both in my experience are harmless to use in default mode.
