Network Problem with wrong IP address range

G

Guest

I have a home network connecting 3 PCs ( 2 on XP Pro and 1 on Me ) and was working fine for a long time( more than 1 year). Suddenly, 2 days ago 1 XP machine doesn't work and one problem I found out that cause it is the IP address. The router I am using is DLink Wireless G model DI-624, it is using the IP address range 192.168.0.xxx and subnet mask 255.255.255.0 and is DNCP enable. However when I ran IPconfig on the problem PC, it shows Auto Configuration IP address 169.254.119.168 and subnet mask 255.255.0.0. I try to release and renew with no success gaining the 192.168.0.xxx range
Can someone tell me what my problem is

Thank

Thomas,

The ip address 169.254.x.x is an APIPA address, and is assigned by XP itself,
because it is not getting a response from the DHCP server on the router. So
either it is not connecting to the router, or the router is declining to issue
an address.

If DHCP is being issued by the router, is there a DHCP log? Is DHCP setup with
enough ip addresses to issue to all of your PCs? Any chance some "neighbor" is
using ip addresses?

Is this a wireless connection? Is there a diagnostic available with the card?
Any display of signal strength?

Is there any activity log on the router that might indicate activity, or
diagnostic of the problem?

Cheers,
Chuck

It is a wired connection and the connection should be fine because when I try assign a static IP to this problem PC, it shows up on the local network and able to see the other 2 PCs and vice versa, however there is one problem with this is it still cannot get a internet connection
The log from the router doesn't show any activity with the problem PC but is OK with the other 2 PCs.
Can someone tell me what to do next

Thank

Thomas,

Please provide ipconfig information for each computer, including for the problem
computer with a static ip address.
Start - Run - "cmd". Type "ipconfig /all >c:\ipconfig.txt" into the command
window - Open c:\ipconfig.txt in Notepad, copy and paste into your next post.
Identify operating system with each ipconfig listing.

Are you saying that, even with a static ip address assigned, the problem PC can
share files with the other pcs, but can't get internet? Have you actually
opened files between the three pcs, or have you just looked at the contents of
My Network Places?

Does everything in the router log look like activity that you know is coming
from the other 2 pcs? No extra activity from a wireless connection hijack?

Are you using MAC address filtering to protect your wireless LAN? Check the
filter table, make sure that the problem PC is not in there.

Is the DHCP server on the router configured for enough dynamic addresses?

What security settings are you using to protect your wireless LAN?

Cheers,
Chuck

Yes, that is correct. With the static IP assigned, I am able to share files between the 3 PCs but still having trouble going to the internet

The router log look OK to me, nothing suspicious

Yes, I am using MAC address filtering to protect my wireless LAN and the problem PC MAC is not in the list

the DHCP server on the router has been configured to use 192.168.0.100 to 192.168.0.199

Hope all this infomations can give you an idea on how I might be able to fix my problem

Thanks in advanc

Thomas,

What entries are in the MAC address filtering list on the router?

From the ipconfig data, I see that Brian (the computer with the problem) is not
using DHCP? Your original post implies it is ("when I ran IPconfig on the
problem PC, it shows Auto Configuration IP address 169.254.119.168 and subnet
mask 255.255.0.0..."). If you're going to manually assign an ip address for it,
try manually assigning DNS servers too.

Please enable DHCP on Brian, then rerun and repost ipconfig and...
From Brian:
1) Ping www.yahoo.com.
2) Ping 66.94.230.33.
3) Ping 192.168.0.1.
Report success / failure of each test.

MAC filtering : I use the option "Only allow computers with MAC address listed below to access the network" and the lists contains brian's MAC

Using the static IP 192.168.0.125, here are the results of the ping:
1) www.yahoo.co
Ping request could not find host www.yahoo.co
2) 66.94.230.3
Succes
3) 192.168.0.
Succes

Here is the result of ping and ipconfig /all after I change it to DHCP:
1) www.yahoo.co
Ping request could not find host www.yahoo.co
2) 66.94.230.3
Destination host unreachabl
3) 192.168.0.

Thomas,

OK, your situation is becoming a bit clearer.

Is Benson and Daddy also in the MAC filter?

With your (brian) ip address manually assigned, you're connecting to the router,
and to the internet. But you have no dns, so pinging www.yahoo.com gives "could
not find host".

The APIPA address puts brian on its own subnet (169.254.0.0/16), so no
connectivity with the router and "destination host unreachable".

Try manually assigning a dns server address 192.168.0.1 to brian - benson is
using that setting. See if your www.yahoo.com ping improves.

If a manually assigned dns helps, then it's time to get D-Link Tech Support
involved. From all you've told me, I can't see any problem other than the DHCP
server on the router which is not assigning an address to brian. Apparently no
connectivity problem anyway. And if you don't see all DHCP addresses
192.168.0.100-199 assigned, then no excuse there.

Let us know what you find out, please.

Cheers,
Chuck
