Hi guys,

I have problem with my nic card. I have a router install and keeps showing
169.254.81.207 while it should show 192.168.0.XXX. The DHCP is set on
automatic. My subnet mask is 255.255.0.0. I don't get it. My router DHCP
address is working because the rest of computer that connected to the router
are working properly. Even when i manually assign an IP address i still
don't get internet or can't access network for shared resources. I click
repaired hundreds of time, but it fail and asked to contact my network
administrator. Also I went in Command Prompt and type "ipconfig /flushdns"
and it did beautifully, and then I type "ipconfig /release" an it gave me
this Message"

Windows IP Configuration

Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection 5:

Autoconfiguration IP Address...........: 169.254.82.207
Subnet Mask....................................: 255.255.0.0
Default Gateway...............................:

C:\Document and settings\Jay Doshi>

I also tried to renew the ipaddress and this what it gave me as an error
message.

Windows IP Configuration

An error ocured while renwing interface Local Area Connection 5: An
operation was attempted on something that is not a socket.

C:\Document and Settings\Jay Doshi>

I have also tried to delete the NIC card from device manage and restarted
the computer. Still the same problem. Can anyone help me out.

I'd be interested in part of the answer to your question because I just
recently saw a system that didn't get an address via DHCP.

Is there a firewall running on this computer? That could cause what you're
seeing I can imagine. So, I would suggest two things. Set the IP address
manually and check the firewall to make sure it puts the LAN range in the
Trusted Zone or something similar according to your security policies.

With the trusted zone set up properly, perhaps DHCP will work.

I have no firewall and i have already tried what you said. Is there any
other solution. Thanks for helping me out, but already tried.

The 'not a socket' error usually indicates winsock corruption.

Follow the Winsock repair procedure described
in this article:

Lately there has been an explosion in posts about this problem where the
usual checks/fixes don't seem to work. In the past, the last resort
solution was to uninstall/re-install TCP/IP - see:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;285034

or a complete repair install of Windows.

However, a number of people have reported success with the following:

http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm

I cannot recommend this because I don't know how to diagnose whether this is
your problem. However, if this machine has had spyware/addware issues in
the past, it may be worth a try.

I am experiencing the same problem every since I
downloaded the most recent Windows XP updates on Monday
July 19. I spoke with Dell support and they believe that
perhaps the Windows Updates corrupted Winsock.

I was advised that I will have to reinstall my operating
system. This seems very time consuming and impractical.
Any help would be greatly appeciated if I can avoid doing
the reinstallation this weekend.

Read this article and perform the steps. This will probably fix
your problem without re-installing Windows:

FWIW I am finding "apparent" winsock corruption on XP computers more
frequently. I routinely use lsafix.exe and winsockxpfix.exe (for the
OP, Google the names). My thinking is that the source of corrupton
might be peer to peer file sharing since it is I find it so frequently
on computers used by teenagers with file sharing installed.

There are no shortage of apps that corrupt the winsock catalog and
file-sharing programs are likely among them. In fact I can't think of any
programs that uses a Winsock provider that can make it work in all cases.

I had the same problem as described and I tried every thing EXCEP
changing my registry files before I tried LSPfix. LSPfix resolved m
problem in less than five minutes. If I am ever "stuck" on
169.254.x.x IP address again. I will use LSPfix first to save hours o
time.

Thanks for the help. These forums are invalauble resources.
appreciate you experts sharing your knowledge and experience.
