Network Places Local vs. Internet confused

My WinXP Pro SP2++ machine has several shares as do other machines on
computers on the local net. In Network Places, some of these shares show up
in Local Network and some as The Internet. How is association with "Local
Network" vs. "The Internet" determined? Why would some shares from the local
machine show up in one location and some in the other???

Thanks for any help!

Surely somebody knows how XP determines whether a Network Place is Local
Network or Internet???!?
