XP Networking: accessing local & networked shares

\\MYDESKTOP: XP-Pro SP2 \\MYLAPTOP: XP-Home SP2
D-Link wireless router

I get the dreaded msg: \\MYDESKTOP\MySharedData is not accessible. You
might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the
administrator....

Laptop can see Desktop shares, but cannot access them (above msg).
Desktop can see and access Laptop shares just fine.

The weird thing is.... on the Desktop (leaving the laptop & laptop shares
out of it)
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
If I go to 'My Network Places' on MYDESKTOP, the shares on MYDESKTOP (and
the laptop) are shown and can be accessed.

If I go to 'My Network Places' on my \\MYDESKTOP, trying to access
\\MYDESKTOP shares from the same computer (\\MYDESKTOP) when going through:

Network Places|View workgroup computers| <MyWorkgroup>|MYDESKTOP

I can see the \\MYDESKTOP shares but cannot access them. I get the message
above. (I can still see and access \\MYLAPTOP shares as before).

I have tried it with the firewall (PC-Illin) off. I have set up my LAN IP
range into my router DMZ.

I have been into Local Security Policies as recommended in various places
and tried many different settings.

Mike,

One of the most common causes of this problem would be a misconfigured or
overlooked personal firewall, or other security component. Note that disabling
third party firewalls (like PC-Illin) isn't always the best solution. There are
several other possibilities too, and any might be the cause of your problem.

For more direct help, provide "browstat status" and "ipconfig /all" from each
computer, so we can diagnose the problem. Read this article, and linked
articles, and follow instructions precisely (download browstat!):

CHICAGO is my desktop PC. This is where I can view but cannot access it's
own shares via "My Network Places | View Workgroup computers" (just trying
to simplify...I figure if I can solve it locally, pehaps I can then access
them via the network & form the laptop). I have the Windows firewall off and
as I said, I also turn off my PC-Illin firewall which doesnt help anything.
And my IP range (192.168.0.1 -> 101) in my router LAN DMZ.

Thanks for the response!

Mike,

OK, to start, Chicago is running both IPV6 and IPX/SPX. Please remove both, if
not absolutely necessary for other purposes.

If problems continue, rerun "browstat status" and "ipconfig /all" on BOTH
computers, and post again.

cdiag from desktop & from laptop with firewalls off (I had some firewall
stuff changed from experimenting trying to fix). IGNORE the previous 2 cdiag's

<SNIP>

Mike,

OK, no faults displayed in either CDiag. All tests show negative. There is one
issue:
"CHICAGO ping CHICAGO"

Pinging chicago [::1]

The [::1], which should show a resolved IP address (192.168.0.100), is normal
for a computer running Teredo Tunneling aka IPV6. Did you not remove that (and
IPX/SPX)? And what symptoms are you observing currently?

If you did in fact remove IPV6 and IPX/SPX, and you are still having the
reported problem (and still showing the noted corrupted name resolution), then
it's time to look at LSP / Winsock corruption.

where do I check for Teredo Tunneling aka IPV6? If I right click on my
network connections...it doesnt show Teredo Tunneling?

It shows:
Client for Microsoft Networks
File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks
NWLink NetBIOS
NWLINK IPX/SPX/NetBIOS Compatible Transport Proto...
MIcrosoft TCP/IP Version 6
INternet Protocol (TCP/IP)

I don't believe I removed anything.

Symptoms (the most obvious one..leaving the laptop out of it for now):

From CHICAGO:

I can see and access my local shares via 'My Network Places'

I can view, but get the access message when I try to access my local
shares via My Network Places | View workgroup Computers | CHICAGO

Does this help?

Thanks.... I think I installed these when trying to make sure NETBIOS was
enabled. Found that elsewhere of course. It is shown as enabled.

removed them on CHICAGO & mda-laptop as suggested.

no change.

\\CHICAGO can view & access it's own shares from My Network Places, but
cannot access its own shares from "View Workgroup Computers | CHICAGO"

mda-laptop can view & access it's own shares, but can only view \\CHICAGO
shares. When trying to access \\CHICAGO shares, gives the msg:
"\\CHICAGO\chicago-documents is not accessible....."

It looks like
"CHICAGO ping CHICAGO"
Pinging chicago [::1]
The [::1], which should show a resolved IP address (192.168.0.100)

is fixed.

Mike,

OK, let's go back to the original symptoms then.

I'm rereading your original problem report.

I cannot parse this. The first paragraph is easy enough. But what is "'My
Network Places' on my \\MYDESKTOP"? Is it where you're trying to access the
Desktop from the Laptop? Or are you trying to access the Desktop from itself?
And if the latter, what results do you get when accessing the Desktop from the
Laptop?

Anyway, now that we've eliminated connectivity and protocols from the possible
problem cause, we're left yet to investigate firewalls and permissions. Let's
take a step back, and look at "browstat status" and "ipconfig /all" from each
computer, that we have not yet done.

And noting that MyDesktop is running XP Pro, is it with Simple File Sharing
enabled or disabled?

MYDESKTOP = CHICAGO (initial post I tried to keep it self explanatory..sorry
for the confusion).

I tried to reduce the problem to CHICAGO being able to view but not being
able to access it's own shares via:
Network Places|View workgroup computers| <MyWorkgroup>|CHICAGO

It can view & access them via My Network Places (not going thru View
Workgroup Computers path).

I just thought this as odd so I concentrated on this (possibly simplier)
problem that if solved it may solve the mda-laptop not being able to acess
CHICAGO shares.

CHICAGO can access & view the laptop (mda-laptop) just fine.

mda-laptop can view, but cannot access CHICAGO shares.

All tried with both mda-laptop & CHICAGO firewalls disabled (not
uninstalled..but I am considering that as a test)

CHICAGO (XP-Pro SP2) Simple File Sharing has always (and is) been disabled.

I will run browstat status and ipconfig /all and post here. With firewalls
OFF.

Thanks again for all of your time....

OK, Mike,

That's a unique approach. You have to understand that most folks like you
wouldn't think of investigating to your depth before posting a problem report.
So I got confused. That wasn't the first time and it probably won't be the
last. %-}

Anyway, if there are any problems with accessing or viewing resources on
Chicago, from itself, AND there are similar problems when accessing or viewing
resources on Chicago from MDA-Laptop, then I'd bet you have a firewall or
network configuration issue. So let's start with browstat and ipconfig.

You also might enumerate the LSP on Chicago. I'm wondering about the "firewalls
off" success.

Mike,

This looks clean so far.
# Both computers on same subnet, and both using same DHCP and DNS server.
# Both computers in same workgroup, and both have elected same master browser.
# Both computers see each other in workgroup.
# Neither computer shows any evidence of IPV6 or IPX/SPX.

Note that disabling third party firewalls (like PC-Illin) isn't always the best
solution. I recommend that you start by enabling it, then un installing it. Go
to the vendor, and find out exact and complete procedures for doing so. Many
firewalls hook into the LSP, which is why I asked you for an enumeration of that
earlier.

Guest

would u recommend I try resetting my LSP/winsock??

To fix a corrupted LSP / Winsock in XP SP2:

1. Start - Run - "cmd".
2. Type "netsh winsock reset catalog" into the command window.
3. Reboot.

P.S. was an IT manager...software development.....also managed the unix
system adm group for a few years for a BIG company. So not too bad at
debugging. Just know little about networking innards and debugging them.
