Network Password Required for IPC$

G

Gregg

I have replaced to systems in a office with computers running XP Pro SP2.
One system I'll call ws2 has a single hard drive and I shared the documents
so other users on the network can access them. The other computers in the
office (6) are running Windows 98 SE and can access the shared folder and
printer on ws2. The other new computer, ws1, has two drives C and E and a
DVDRW drive D. I have a shared folder on the C drive that supports the
client practice software and a shared printer. This system also uses a
dialup connection that it shares with the other computers in the office. The
windows XP system ws2 can access these shares but when I try to access ws1
from the Windows 98 systems I get a dialog saying "Enter Network Password"
for the Resource: \\ws1\IPC$. I have tried the user and admin passwords but
they are not accepted and for some reason I don't have the same problem with
ws2.
Any guidance would be appreciated.

TIA,
Gregg

That's Windows 98 SE's cryptic way of telling you that XP Pro denied
access because it didn't recognize the user who requested it.

Create an account on the XP Pro machine (ws1) with the same user name
and password that you use to log onto the Win98SE machine. If the
shared resources on XP Pro have the default "Everyone" permission,
that will solve the problem.

Thanks Steve, that worked. Now my next question, is there any way to hide
the user logon icons when windows starts without going to the classic view
and having the user type the user name each time they log in?

You're welcome, Gregg.
Now my next question, is there any way to hide
the user logon icons when windows starts without going to the classic view
and having the user type the user name each time they log in?

I'm sorry, but I don't know the answer.

I recommend posting that question in a new news group message with a
descriptive subject like "How to Hide User Logon Icons".
