Network Nightmares

Hi Everyone. I am a relative newbie to networks, and have what seems a
simple problem, but cannot find a solution.

I have a desktop and laptop, both running win xp sp2. I have used the
network wizard to set up an ethernet network on both. Both computers
can access the internet no problem. However whereas the desktop can
see and access shared files on the laptop, the converse is not true.
Although the laptop can see the shared file folders on the desktop, an
error message appears when I try to open the folder: "...\shared docs
is not accessible. You might not have permission etc."

Any suggestions gratefully received.( I have turned off firewalls).

Thanks

What user account are you using to access the files?
Does an account with exactly the same name and password exist on the other
machine?
If you have an account with the same name but a different password problems
can occur.
If the 'server' machine does not have an account with the same name as that
being used on the 'client' machine you'll be asked to provide one, and
things should work OK.

I am using xp home and a friend told me that user accounts shouldn't
be an issue. Never the less, I have the same account set up on both
(although no password used) and also enabled guest account on both -
all to no avail.

What amazes me is that I can actually see the shared file folder but
cannot open it - surely I shouldn't even be able to see it if there
was an issue?

No, seeing a share is entirely different from being able to open it.
It's the same with secured folder on the disc too.

With XP Home you have to be using "Simplified file sharing" which means you
only have a fixed set of permissions that you can apply to each share.
I'm afraid I haven't used XP Home, so I can't tell you anything about the
UI, but can you find the permissions assigned to the two shares?
Are they both set the same?

Something else you can try is connecting to the share from the machine that
is doing the sharing (i.e. connect to the desktop from the desktop).
If you cannot do this then the problem probably lies with the configuration
of the share.
