Network/modem icon in taskbar

Once in a while I still need to use my dialup modem (when broadband
isn't up, frex). Lately - the last few months - the modem has been
working fine, but the little "two-monitors" icon has not been
displaying in the Notification Area. In the Dialup Connection menu in
the Settings, I *do* have the "display icon in notification area"
checkbox checked.

One obnoxious effect of this is that I have found no way to disconnect
the telephone line other than to reboot.

So two questions:
- How can I restore the icon to the notification area when the modem
is connected?
- Or, how can I disconnect the modem without clicking on the icon?

WindowsXP SP1, all service packs applied (still holding back on SP2)

I'm sorry, John, but I don't know why the icon doesn't appear in the
notification area..

To disconnect a dial-up connection without rebooting:

1. Open the Network Connections folder.
2. Click the dial-up connection.
3. Click Disconnect.

John,

did the icon never appear any more or does it sometimes appear?

I would try to create an entirely new connection and see if that
works better.

If all else fails, you can use the rasdial command to
disconnect. For example, if the name of your connection is x,
enter:

rasdial x /disconnect

You can put this command into a batch file and put that into the
quick links, so you can always disconnect with one mouse click.

Thanks, Hans-Georg, Steve and Abel. This isn't the only oddity I'm
encountering... may need to see if installing SP2 fixes this and some
other wierd stuff with IE.
