network is not present or not started

Hello,

I posted this on the win2k setup news group, but no luck. Hopefully,
someone here can help me.

I am trying to configure a peer to peer network between my laptop and PC.
Both run Win2K

On the PC I get network is not present or not started. I check the installed
components and networking is installed.

I can ping from the laptop 192.168.0.4 to the PC 192.168.0.1 but not vice
versa.

I can log onto the PC from the laptop but not vice versa.

The Network ID box on the PC under system properties is greyed out.

The workgroup is the same name, case, spelling, etc. for both.

I have tried to make changes my account with admin privileges as well as the
built in admin
account. No luck there either.

How do I turn on networking?

Suggestions?

Thanks in advance for you help,

Dave

Verify that Client for Microsoft Networks and file and print sharing are installed
and enabled for tcp/ip and that the workstation and server services are started [use
service.msc] on the problem computer. Nbtstat -n should show at least three entries.
Software firewalls or "protection" software may also cause a problem. Booting into
safe mode with networking may also be worth a try as far as pinging and connecting
though you should not do that unless you have other protection from the internet such
as a hardware NAT router. --- Steve

Thanks for the suggestion. I'm heading off on holiday, and will give it a
try when I return.
