Network Help Please

Hi,
This one is driving me nuts. I have networked two
machines together. The computers are connected to a hub,
and each computer has a separate dial-up connection.
Security is not a problem because both machines have dial-
up connections that are only used about once a month so
there is no firewall issues.

The network seems fine BUT here's the problem.
I can access machine #2 from machine #1 no problem BUT I
CAN NOT access machine #1 from machine #2 ..

I can see both machines in my workgroup but when I try to
access machine #1 from machine #2 I get an message saying:

\\machine 1 is not accessible
You might not have permissions to use this network
resource. Contact the administrator of this server to
find out if you have access permissions.
Access Denied

IP Config seems good, machine 1= 169.254.144.233 ...
machine 2 = 169.254.93.101 both are Automatic Private
Addresses
I can ping machine 1 from machine 2 and I can ping
machine 2 from machine 1

There is no firewall on either machine
Guest is enabled on both machines

Both machines are running Windows XP Pro. The only
difference is machine #2 was a 'clean install', machine
#1 was a upgrade from Windows 98 SE ...

Help please...
Can someone point me in the right direction to fix

create a common user account with same password on both machines, logon with
that account.

On any XP Pro computer, check to see if Simple File Sharing (Control Panel -
Folder Options - View - Advanced settings) is enabled or disabled. With XP Pro,
you need to have SFS properly set on each computer.

With XP Pro, if SFS is disabled, check the Local Security Policy (Control Panel
- Administrative Tools). Under Local Policies - Security Options, look at
"Network access: Sharing and security model", and ensure it's set to "Classic -
local users authenticate as themselves".

With XP Pro, if you set the Local Security Policy to "Guest only", make sure
that the Guest account is enabled, thru Local User Manager (Start - Run -
"lusrmgr.msc"), and has an identical, non-blank, password on all computers. If
"Classic", setup and use a common non-Guest account, with identical, non-blank,
password on all computers.

And Leon, please don't contribute to the spread and success of email address
mining viruses. Learn to munge your email address properly, to keep yourself a
bit safer when posting to open forums. Protect yourself and the rest of the

Thanks for your time .. None of that was helpful .. It
was all already done and it still doen't work .. I'm
wondering about partition permissions?? The machine that
I can't access used FAT32 the other uses NTFS ??? Anyway

Hello Leon, I have a very similar problem: A wireless
router -11g and adapter card for Laptop-11g. PC is ethernet
to router. Both machines access the internet and use
printer . PC will access Laptop...Laptop will NOT access
the PC, UNLESS I remove the antivirus program from the PC
(not just turn it off but remove it). Have tried two
different Antivirus--Norton and AGV. Same problem exists
wit h both turned on. Using Windows XP home edition on both
machines. Have had a techician ($192.00 worth) look at
things and still no answer... He suggests reinstalling OS,
which I would do only as a last resort. There is an
answer, so will just keep looking. If you get an answer
would really like to hear from (e-mail address removed)
(computers sure are fun...ha)
