Network Folder Permissions

Hi,

I'm using Windows XP Home SP2 on my home PCs. I want to restrict
access to a particular folder on my desktop so that this folder can
only be accessed from the PC on which it is stored *and* from just one
of my laptops. The other laptops in the house would not be able to see
or have access to this folder. Is this possible? Only possible using
Win XP Pro? Or is this only possible on a Win 2003 Server domain
network where you can set all kinds of fancy policies?

Is it possible to give another laptop on an XP Home network permission
to access folders on the Admin account directory on the main desktop?
It seems like that would work because presumably no other PCs could
access that directory.

I'm using Windows networking over wifi.

Right now I have the folder as "shared" on my F: drive (where all the
main data files are stored). I have tried using utilities which lock
and unlock the folder, but when the folder is unlocked, others can see
& access it. And it is a pain to lock and unlock the folder when I
need to access its contents.

Any ideas would be most appreciated. Thanks.

It can be done easily with XP Pro in a workgroup. This is not done by
computer but by user.

XP does not use passwords to protect resources. It uses permissions
instead. Here is information to help you with that:

How to disable Simple Sharing and set permissions on a shared folder in
Windows XP (Pro only)
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=307874

HOW TO: Set, View, Change, or Remove File and Folder Permissions in
Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=308418

By default in XP Home, you can only make files and folders under My
Documents "private". Otherwise, to see the security tab in WinXP Home,
restart in Safe mode and log on with an account that has administrator
privileges. To get into Safe Mode, repeatedly tap the F8 key as the
computer is starting up. This will get you to the menu where you can
choose Safe Mode.

Note that the file system must be NTFS, not FAT32.

Passwording of folders is not supported unless you zip them. When you do
(right click a folder, then "send to > compressed folder") and then open
the zip file, you will find an option under file>"add a password".
Otherwise, use third-party software. Google "password protect folders".
[end cut/paste]

So in order to do what you want, you would need to put the folder in
your My Documents and make them private OR find a better third-party
utility OR zip/password-protect OR upgrade to XP Pro.
