XP Home Folder Protection

Hi,

I have 3 PCs (call them A, B & C) at my home all connected with wifi.
They all use XP Home SP2. They can all see each other. How do I set
things up so B can access a folder on A, but C is denied access to
that same folder?

Is there some freeware that can do this? Does it require XP Pro?

I tried booting up A in Safe Mode to change the permissions. But B & C
could still access the folder over the network.

I do not want to encrypt or compress the folder on A. I just want to
password protect it.

Thanks,

Tom

Probably the easiest way is to use the Windows Firewall on A so that the
file and print sharing exemption is enabled but only for the IP address of
computer B. To make that work well you will need to use static IP addresses
and are sure that they will be maintained. XP Pro can offer more granular
access to network shares by users [not computers] when simple file sharing
is enabled.

Hi, Thanks for the info. BTW, all my drives are NTFS. I don't think static
IPs are an option for us. We're using a standard broadband router with NAT. I
think static routable IPs cost extra per month. Can it be set up to use
static non-routable IPs on each PC behind the router? Is that the solution
you're thinking of? I only know a smidgen about networking. Let me know if
static non-routable IPs on each PC is what you were thinking of. Would this
require we change our DHCP configuration? Can a standard home router support
this configuration?

Any 3rd party open source freeware provide the kind of protection I'm seeking?

Thanks,

Tom

Yes you can certainly configure static IP addresses on computers on your
local network and they would still be able to access the internet without
the need to get more public IP addresses. To access the internet they only
need the correct default gateway and DNS servers and in many routers I
believe you can simply specify the default gateway as the DNS server. You
can run the command ipconfig /all on one of your computers now to see the
current tcp/ip info including DNS servers and default gateway. In the
properties of a network adapter for tcp/ip you can choose to specify tcp/ip
address, subnet, and default gateway if you uncheck obtain IP address
automatically. It is good that you are using NTFS but XP Home only allows
guest access to network shares and not the level of security that XP Pro
can.
