Network File Sharing Problem

R

Robert

Hello all,

I have a wireless network with what I will call the host computer
running XP and connected to a DSL modem that supports wireless
networking. I have a win98 laptop client on this network. From the
host I can do anything to the files on the laptop. From the laptop I
can't reach the files on the host. I get a chime and the message that I
don't have permission.

On the host, when I go to the directory I want to reach (C:\My
Computer\Documents and Settings\Robert) and click "sharing and
security", I notice that the box "share this folder on the network" is
checked, but grayed out and all the folders below that folder in the
hierarchy, which are the ones I want to reach from the laptop, have the
sharing options grayed out, I can't change them. I guess this is why I
can't reach them. How do I correct this?

Thank you,
Robert

From first glance it appears as you don't have the correct permissions to do
so. Is this part of a network at home?

If so and if you have access to the administrator account, check the
permissions under your user name or what group you are under.

You have to run the stupid Wizard to share folders and printers on XP Home
before you can access share on it. If you have already done that try sharing
the shared documents folder first to see if that works which be default
should have permissions to allow anonymous access. The built in Windows
Firewall can also block access to shares on your XP Home computer if it is
enabled without the exception for file and print sharing for your subnet.
Windows 98 will also need to Client for Microsoft Networks enabled for
tcp/ip. The link below may also help.
