LAN without resorting to internet email etc.?

Try Bassline WinPopUp, http://basslinesoft.com/
You can send and receive messages using Computer, Logon name or Workgroup name.
Objects like Excel chart or PowerPoint slide can be embedded to the message.
It supports file/folder transfer and a lot more features.

Try WinMessenger. Works with
all W9x, W2K and XP. It has very nice, "native" user interface under
Windows XP and drop-down list with users...
