Recently I added an additional desktop IBM(E-50 ) to our existing network of
4-IBM(A-50) desktops and 2-IBM Laptops (T-22).I used the network setup
wizzard as I did the first time I setup this network.

System information: (All)
Windows Xp Professional 2002
Version 5.1.2600 Build 2600 sp2

LAN-Cabled
Hub-Cisco 1538 M
Modem-Actiontec-GT701-WG
DSL-QWEST

1st.Problem-DSL modem now being accessed by all computers thru the network
hub,not thru the host computer.

2nd.Problem-DSL modem access is denied on host computer.
Message:"Internet shared computer is not configured to let network users
control or disable the shared connection."

I am denied access to the advanced tab in the modem propertys to check
status and settings as an administrator(user) and still denied as the
administrator on the host computer.

Permissions are set to allow users (administrators) and the administrator to
change network settings.Group settings are the same.

3rd.Problem-Files that were accessable on all desktops on the host computer
are mostly accessable and some are denied access.

4th.Probelm-System restore will not restore host computer to any restore
point.System restore was on and has been used in the past.

Additional problems seem to be showing up daily other then above from once a
stable system.

The problems all seem to be coming from the host computer after adding one
additional desktop using the network setup wizzard.

I hope that enough information is givin and if you need more I can post
additional information.

Any advice and a place to start would be helpfull.

Thanks

Pete

Sounds like there are two adapters in the problem machine and it is running
ICS. Not clear whether you want to run ICS, or you used to and don't
anymore, or what.

In any event your modem is actually a modem/router. If it is properly
connected to the Cisco device, then all machines connected to the hub will
access the Internet through the router. However, if you connect the LAN
adapter of an ICS machine to the hub, you will have two DHCP sources on the
same network and this will cause multiple issues.

Hi

Quote" "Problem-DSL modem now being accessed by all computers thru the

If this is your setup and you have only one Dynamic IP from your ISP, you
are lucky that it is partially working.

If have few External IPs then you are creating a LAN that is based on public
IPs which is very "Quirky" arrangement that makes adequate sharing
impossible.

The best solutions would be to acquire a Cable/DSL router and configure the
systems around it.

It should look like this, http://www.ezlan.net/network/router.jpg

Mr. Sherman,

In the initial setup the network were just two desktops using a small
Ethernet hub
with one desktop having dial up service with AOL. The dial up was not shared.
As the other computers were donated and added I installed the larger 8 port
Cisco managed hub before connecting to DSL. All was well. Advice was given
in
the DSL setup from church members to be sure that the DSL is installed on
one
computer and a firewall installed on that computer. Qwest our DSL provider
had me
install their software on one desktop only. The initial setup was using the
desktop
with Qwest DSL software as the host computer and share with the other
desktops.
I ran the new connection wizard for the DSL modem and then the network
connection
Wizard. I made a disk and copied the settings to each computer. This has
worked for
more than a year until I added the last desktop. I used the same procedure
to ad a
new desktop using the network setup wizard and did not change any settings
on the
shared connection. Now the problems began. The first thing I noticed was
that every
desktop or laptop now showed the DSL modem in network connections and also
the
activity was noticed on each computer on the desktop LAN connection icon
ithelower
right hand side of the screen. Although the DSL connection works as well as
ever
the host computer is unstable and has some access and permission problems
along
with file sharing and open files closing suddenly or just locking up.

I wonder which step I missed or just configured the system incorrectly
in the beginning?

Perhaps I even do not have the proper equipment i.e. the Cisco Hub?

Let me know what you think.

Thanks

Pete

NOTE: Each desktop has only one network card and no modems.

Sir,

The computer setup looks exactly like your link (It should look like this,
http://www.ezlan.net/network/router.jpg)

With the exception of the router I have a Cisco managed hub.

Qwest DSL details:

ISP Protocal:PPPoA
IP Type: Dynamic IP(DHCP)

History of what happened follows.

In the initial setup the network were just two desktops using a small
Ethernet hub
with one desktop having dial up service with AOL. The dial up was not shared.
As the other computers were donated and added I installed the larger 8 port

I ran the new connection wizard for the DSL modem and then the network
connection Wizard. I made a disk and copied the settings to each computer.

any settings on the shared connection. Now the problems began. The first

Sorry, but I don't follow this part: " The initial setup was using the
desktop with Qwest DSL software as the host computer and share with the
other desktops." Per the Quest support site a PPoA connection is configured
on the Actiontec GT701, not the desktop:

http://www.qwest.com/internethelp/modems/gt701/index.html

Part of your problems may be resulting from a browser conflict caused by the
new machine. Try setting the Computer Browser Service to Manual start on
that machine. Reboot all machines.
