Home Phoneline Network Connection Causes Loss of DSL

steve

This is my third post on this problem and I still have no solution.

In order to share a DSL connection with another computer, I networked
them together
using the home phoneline system (HPNA). To make a long story short,
when all was said and done the network connection does work to the
extent of making folder and file sharing possible but as long as it is
connected the DSL connection is lost and in order to use DSL you have
to disconnect the local network.

I just spent a lot of time talking to about four people at ATT/Yahoo
DSL support and one or two at 2Wire (maker of the HPNA phone line
adapters) tech support.

The last guy I talked to was the only one with a clue. He concluded
that I had to have a router between the DSL modem supplied by ATT and
the host computer.

It clearly states in Windows XP Help and Support and on the Microsoft
web site that the only hardware required for a home phoneline network
are one adapter for each computer apparently because enabling ICS
(internet connection sharing) on the host computer in effect turns the
host computer into a router.

Now I find it said on the ATT support web site that even though you
might get by without a router using ICS there are disadvantages (e.g.
you have to leave the host computer running to access the internet
connection) so you're better off using a router.

I'll buy that, all things being equal. But, hey, there's a whole
bunch of "routers" out there with prices running from petty cash to a
big ticket. How to choose?

Hi
Wireless Cable/DSL Router, it is a device (size of a book) that connects
between the Internet Modem and the computers.
This device Routes (direct) the Internet to the appropriate computer.

You can plug in 4 computers with cable and many commuters can connect
wirelessly.

The system would be connected like this,

A good choice can be this, http://www.ezlan.net/buffalo.html

A Router is a very good idea No matter what. However your trouble with the
combo HPNA probably would persist.

I am not surprise. you load one Tel system with DSL. Regular Phone, and HPNA
+ the DSL Filters.

I would get rid of the HPNA and use the Router (and may be wireless too) to
build a regular Ethernet Network.

If you can not change the HPNA system get a second Tel line that would serve
the DSL and nothing else, and leave the regular phone and the HPNA on the
current line.
