Network Drive Content Only Accessable After Clicking Drive In Expl

Hi,

I am experiencing a very strange problem with an XP (SP2) machine which has
a mapped network drive to a W2000 server (workgroup). I created the mapped
drive from Explorer and selected the reconnect at logon option. The drive
connects up correctly when the XP machine is rebooted but when I try to get a
directory listing of the mapped network drive from command prompt I get an
error telling me the drive is not found. If I run up Explorer however the
drive is there with the correct letter. When I click on the drive it
displays the correct directories (after a short delay).

The issue is that I am trying to start an application from a desktop
shortcut which automatically opens a file on the network drive. The only way
I can get it to work at the moment is if I get explorer to open on startup
with the network drive selected. Once the network drive has been accessed in
this way the shortcut will always work (until the PC is rebooted). It seems
as if XP is not fully connecting until you run explorer and click on the
drive letter to refresh the drive contents. I tried to refresh the drive
contents by running a batch file on startup which contained:
R:
Dir R:
This did not work as the drive is nor recognised.

After searching the knowledge base I edited the system policy to "Always
wait for the network at computer startup and logon" and "Run logon scripts
synchronously" but it made no difference.

I have also tried to connect the network drive on startup using the Net Use
command in a batch file which executes on startup. The Net Use batch file
did work the first time I tried it but on this occasion the network drive was
already connected (from explorer). When I selected "Replace Existing" it
connected and the drive was accessable from command prompt. I then
disconnected the network drive in explorer and rebooted. This time after I
logged on there was no network drive shown in explorer. I know the syntax is
correct because I have run the batch file and seen the drive connect.

The share on the W2000 server allows everyone Full Control, both machines
are in the same workgroup, and the XP login account has been added to the
servers users. The server and XP client are on different IP networks and
connect via a gateway. The windows XP firewall is turned off.

Any help appreciated.

It this XP HOME or PRO?

Also, if you want to use the batch file as a temp fix note that you could
precede your map line with >net use R: /delete /y so it will function
regardless of a possible disconnected drive mapping interfering.
