Network doesn't work after installing Critical Update Patch.

A user gets a prompt to install a Critical Update patch. It's one of those
ones which comes up in the System Tray every few days or so. After
installing the patch it prompts him to reboot his computer. After
rebooting, he suddenly finds his internet is not working, like as if the
patch is blocking his access or something. He is running XP Pro on a laptop
with a Wi-Fi Wireless B adaptor. I also can't connect to his computer
through the Network Place on another computer, which I am normally able to
do.

I usually see this problem after installing some patches from Windows Update
site, but this time it wasn't from the site. Has anyone else ever had this
happen and was able to fix it without having to reformat their drives? Why
does Microsoft do this to their customers? It is so fustrating. Patches
are supposed to fix things, not create problems.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

TIA

As it turns out, it wasn't the patch. The guy had a virus which probably
was dormant until the time he applied the update patch.
