Network data wrong- Help!

I have a network between my desktop and my laptop and backup my data
successfully between the two
However when I looked at the list of files which are shown on my Desktop
network the files are different from the files on the desktop
The laptop network files are correct as in the laptop
When I look at the laptop again the files on the laptop network are correct
but the files on the desktop network are different
What can be causing this?

"What is a Desktop network"? comes to mind. I'm sorry, but I've read your
problem statement four times, and it still doesn't make any sense.

How are you doing your backup? Do you just manually copy files from the
desktop to the laptop (and vice versa) or are you using some sort of
synchronizing application (e.g., Microsoft's SyncToy)?

Where are you looking at "the list of files"?

Is the actual content of the files different or only the date/time modified?

Give an example. Create a Word document on the desktop and save it on
the desktop as test.doc. Explain the steps you take to back it up to the
laptop and then explain what you do to determine that the file on the
desktop and the file on the laptop are different. Please be specific
and don't omit steps.

Thank you for you reply
I realise now what a mess I made of my problem
Let me say first of all I mentioned backup to explain why I really have a
network between the laptop and the desktop. I have absolutely no problem
with my backup. It works perfectly.
I will talk only about the problem with the desktop data
On my desktop I have my own data seperated in it's own partition and I have
about 37 folders
When I open the network on the laptop and look at the desktop my own data
shows only 3 folders
I had assumed that when I look at the desktop from the laoptop I would see
the same 37 folders!
Hope that explains the problem better

See the many replies you received in the Windows XP newsgroup, then see here
why multi-posting does not win you any friends because it causes duplication
of effort: http://www.blakjak.demon.co.uk/mul_crss.htm. When you wish to
post in several newsgroups then you should use cross-posting so that
everybody can see all the replies.

For some reason your question is missing on the Reply Group?
I found that my own data partition did not allow sharing. I have now enabled
this but so far no change
