setup is a laptop running xp home edition with a realtek ethernet port
connected wo cable modem. This setup was working until recently. ethernet
cable is ok as it works with a PC ( in the same setup as laptop).
on the laptop dhcp fails to get address . netstat -e and netstat -s -p ip
display shows ip and network interface counters increase so the packets are
entering the system. I checked to confirm that tcp/ip filtering is not
checked and ipsec is disabled. I tried the following with no success.
1. netsh int ip reset
2. deleted the winsock and winsock2 registry enteries and reinstalled tcp/ip
as mentioned in a microsoft knowledge base.
3. i had a sp2 fix installed and so un-installed that .
It seems to me that packets are being dropped in the network stack. are
there any debugging to verify that ( logs etc) and fix the problem.
Any other ideas are welcome.
thanks
