Network Connections

When I go into network connections in an attempt to set
up a firewall, there are no connections listed even
though my access to the internet is working fine. Could
this be because I have a router installed or some other
sinister reason (trojan, etc.)?

Software firewalls are setup during the installation of the software.

Hardware firewalls, which I'm assuming you're assuming came with your
router, should be setup in the router when it's turned on - not in network
connections. Check the manaul or the readme on the router CD, or somewhere
in all the stuff you have for instructions - including the web site of the
router manufacturer.
