Under network Neighboorhood, I cannot see Make New Connection, nor the
existing Local Area connection. I am assuming they are hidden somehow,
because this PC has been assigned an IP addresses, and DNS servers, at one
point in time.

I have the latest service pack and updates. Any thoughts?

Also, I have symantec corporate virus protection. Real-Time protection is
enabled (checked), but viruses keep getting through and are only detected
when a scan is run, not when they come in. This is A) why I want to change my
IP Address and B) Symantec told me to uninstall and reinstall the program and
if that does not rectify it, to contact Windows support.

Thanks!!

1. this is not a symantec group so we can't help on that... do what they
say.
2. changing your ip address depends on the network you are connected to,
contact your corporate IT people or your home isp... however this won't help
stopping viruses or your other problems.

as for not seeing network neighborhood, are you really connected to a
network? can you surf and ping and get and send mail? what do you get when
you open a command window and do ipconfig/all? is this a home or office?
how are you connected to the network? behind a router, on dialup, cable,
dsl?? do you even have a modem or ethernet card installed??

Yes, I am connected to the network, because at one point the IP address and
DNS settings were sete. I am part of the internal workgroup, but want to
change my IP address to abother one my ISP/router provides because of this
virus bombardment. When I go to Network and Dial-Up connections, it should
say make new connection, and "local area connection" Through local area
connection I can change the IP address. Those two icons are not there.
