Network Connections window empty

I have an ADSL internet connection that works fine, but it
doesn't show up in neither the system tray nor the network
connections window.

Now I want to make a home network, between 2 pcs with via
crosscable (cat5?). The cables are all there and my
download/upload meter detects traffic, all leds at
networkcards light too. So that's all good.

But now I have to do all the setup and stuff. But because
my network connections window shows up blank I CAN'T DO
ANYTHING. When I press ctl+alt+del, it clearly shows that
there should be a connection called 'LAN-verbinding 2'
(I've the dutch version of win xp professional) but it
DOESN'T show up in the network connections window. Neither
does my ADSL connection, as I said.

How the hell do I fix this. Because I've been wasting all
day trying to get a network working, but it doesn't seem to
work, I'm guessing that if I can set IP values and whatnot
I can make a network... But I can't get to those windows...

Help please, and thanks in advance.
