network connections disappear

Any ideas how to get the icons to reappear in network
connections folder in the control panel? Knowledge base
article 825826 refers to this problem, but specifies it is
for xp pro; I have xp home; wish i had a fix for this

One thing that fixes such problems here is to open
ControlPanel\NetworkConnections (or Start\Settings\NetworkConnections)
and with focus in the NetworkConnections window, press <F5> to refresh
it.

I tried the suggestion from Vincent, which lead to the following message
appearing over the wizard launch:

"The Network Connections folder was unable to regrieve the list of network
adapters on your machine. Please make sure that the network connections
service is enabled and running."

I am willing to live dangerously, so how do I do this.
