Network connection icons in notification area

What do I have to do to my image to get network connection icons to show up
in the notification area?

I have gone to the properties of my connection and checked the box there to
have the icon displayed, but it is not displayed. All I have in my
notification area is the clock.
 
Dear clarks,

Do you enable following settings in "User Interface Core" component?
- Show context menu on Task bar
- Show Notifications on Task bar

Please try it.

I already had those items enabled. Something else is causing my problem.
