Network can see modem but not eachother

Jonno

Hi there,
I have spent two days trying to get my simple network to actually work. Here
is where I'm at.

I have two PCs:- Main PC = MAIN, Second PC = KIDS. Both PCs have XP
installed. MAIN has SP2, KIDS has SP1.

MAIN is conected to a cable modem via a USB converter. KIDS is connected to
MAIN via an ethernet cable.

I have run the network setup wizard several times.

I can use the internet on KIDS fine. It's found the modem through MAIN and
is working.

I setup a workgroup called HOME.

If I go into windows explorer on MAIN, I can see the workgroup and MAIN is
under it. But it can't see KIDS.

If I go into windows explorer on KIDS, I can see the workgroup but nothing
shows under it, not even itself.

I can ping each PC from the other OK.

I have file sharing, netbui and all those things installed.

So, has anyone any idea why each computer can't see the other? Please help
otherwise I'll end up pulling what little hair I have left out.

Cheers,

Jonno

Jonno,

Is Kids connected to Main by a CROSSOVER Ethernet cable? That's the way to
start. Then run the Network Setup Wizard. See my article for all the details:

Please note that you don't need NetBEUI. NetBIOS Over TCP will work fine for
both computers.

For more direct help, provide "browstat status" and "ipconfig /all" from each
computer, so we can diagnose the problem. Read this article, and linked
articles, and follow instructions precisely (download browstat!):

i'm no expert, but you may just need to share your directories. in order for
a directory to be accessible over lan you have to share it by right clicking
the dirctory and selecting "Sharing and Security..." and check the "Share
this folder on the network" checkbox.
