Simple XP Home Network Problems. Computer refuses to see workgroup!

D

DemonTraitor

Before I start, I am a computer programmer, and I have years of
experience in networking - but even this is not helping!!!!

I have recently completed a fresh install of XP on two computers. My
kids PC was the most recent and is simply running XP, and Kaspersky
Antivirus.

As soon as the kids PC was up and running, I set-up everything as I
have always had it, for many years. Entered the static-ip, enabled
NetBIOS over TCP/IP, and created a new workgroup etc. And yes, all
works perfectly. I can view the network and workgroup fine.

I do the same to my PC, although I have ZoneAlarm, and all the latest
XP updates running on mine too. BUT, for some completely random
reason, when I try to view the workgroup I get a message saying I do
not have permission!

I have disabled Kaspersky, and ZoneAlarm, and even put my computers IP
as the DMZ address in my router, but I still cannot view the
workgroup!

I have always had a workgroup, and shared files etc, and it has always
been a no-brainer to setup - but for some unkown reason (to me) it
will not work!

Can anyone offer any advice?

Best regards - Demon.

Did Zone Alarm "turn off" the XP SP2 "firewall?" Not familiar with
Kaspersky but I do know of some anti-virus that add a "hidden"
firewall like module (Norton and McAfee.) You can turn off Norton's
module (Internet Worm) but you need to "uninstall" McAfee (at least
the last time I tried it -- 2 years ago.)

Windows F/W is off, and was off when I was testing the network.
Basically: Kaspersky, ZA, Windows F/W was all off during testing. As
far as I know, my system was completely nakes to the WAN and LAN.

I am stumped :$

Kaspersky has an antiworm component, that may not be disabled properly. Look
for Proactive Defence, in KAV.

Thanks a mega bunch for this. I will take a good read of this and see
what my problem is. Maybe I should just go back to using NOD32 AV,
which I had before.

Hope it helps. My prediction is that anti-worm protection is going to be more
common, not less, so if NOD doesn't have this now, it will soon. Knowing what
the problem is, and how to fix it, makes more sense to me. YMMV.

Sorted out the problem. I uninstalled Kaspersky on my kids PC, but my
network was still not accessible. I then uninstalled the Network Card
from Device Manager, rebooted the PC and installed the Network card
again. The PC was then able to view the workgroup (although it was the
only PC in the group). I then installed NOD32, and the network was
still there, but then later was again, inaccessible. I pulled out the
remainder of my hair and gave up. This morning I booted up the PC, and
lo and behold the Network was back! Go figure!

I put NOD32 back on my PC, uninstalled the network card, and
reinstalled it (this process was only to get the computer go the
processes of setting up the network just in case).

So now, I am running NOD32 on my PC, and ZoneAlarm. The kids PC is
just running NOD32, and all is PERFECT!

Thanks v.much for all your help. I really did not think of checking my
AV software, as this is not usually a source for network problems -
well in my experience (unless it is an AV F/W all-in-one).

FYI, my ZoneAlarm only handles the F/Wall and has the anti-spyware etc
disabled, so that NOD handles all the naughty software. I like
ZoneAlarm as it allows me to control outbound connections as well as
inbound :)

Thanks again. Demon.
