Network cable unplugged -- and more

I have a Thinkpad with both wired/wireless adapters. Fresh install of WinXP
Pro and completely updated drivers for the adapters.

Here's the problem: When I plug my machine into a wired LAN (happens on all
wired LANs that I access, in several locations) I get a "Network cable
unplugged" message. EXCEPT under the following circumstances:

-- If I unplug a cable from the back of another PC on the network and plug
it into my ThinkPad, I get a connection and an IP address right away.

-- If I turn on the ThinkPad's wireless adapter and am able to get an IP
address that way, then my wired connection clears up and I get an IP address
there, too. (If I have the wireless adapter on and there's no connection, the
wired problem remains.)

What is all this about? (PS The cable(s) I am using have all been tested and
they're all fine. And I just did a reinstall of XP and SP2, and the problem
remains.)

I'm not sure what the real problem is, but you could try going to a
command prompt and use the following command:

ipconfig /renew

Unfortunately ipconfig /renew doesn't do anything, it says "media
disconnected" since , I guess, it doesn't think the cable is there.

Take a look at the power management tab of the adapter's properties. Make
sure it's set the way you want;
