Network Cable is Unplugged

I am running XP Home PC and have an intergrated Realtek Ethernet Adapter
which shows ''Network Cable is Unplugged'' all the time.I have plugged in a cross over cabl
between my Win98 laptop and still the PC shows ''Network Cable is Unplugged''
Does anyone have an idea I could try.
