Network Browser Issue

B

BobBart

I have a w2k domain setup and all seems to be working fine.
If I am logged on the server and go to the network neighborhood and make my
way into the domain I can see all the systems with shares. However if I try
this from any of the clients I get a message telling that the domain is not
accessible, I don't have permissions. Then in the same message it says that
the computer has too many connection. This is not the exact message since I
don't have it infront of me but its very close.
I turned off the browser service on the clients so the domain controller is
the browse master.

Any ideas?

Hi Bobbart,

This is most often seen as a result of the anitivrus software on the client machines. Try
disabling the anitvirus on a few machines and test. We have found that you actually will have
to uninstall the antivirus software to get it to work right. If that works, contact your antivirus
vendor for support or a patch.

Also if the clients are XP, make sure that ICF is not enabled.
On the NIC properties, check under the WINS tab to be sure NetBIOS on the clients is
enabled.

Hope this helps,
Gary

Thanks for the reply.

I have no antivirus program installed on 3 of the clients or the server. 1
client is XP and does have AV installed. But non of the clients can use the
network browsing. The server can but not the clients. But they can create
a network place \\anycomputer and see the shares.
Strange to me.
I even installed wins to see if that would help, but no luck.

Hi Bobbart,

Make sure that NetBIOS over TCP/IP is enabled under the WINS tab on the clients machines
(not the NetBIOS from DHCP).

I assume all clients are pointing to an internal DNS server. If not, then you will want to do that.
You didn't mention if this is a domain or a workgroup. If this is a workgroup, be sure that the
workgroup names are EXACT (it is case sensative).

Make sure the 2000 server is set as the Master Browser:

Using Regedt32:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Browser\Parameters\
IsDomainMaster should be yes.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Browser\Parameters\
MaintainServerList should be yes.

If the server has more than one NIC, see
191611 Symptoms of Multihomed Browsers

Thanks,
Gary
