network backups and shadow copy

I have a small workgroup - all WinXP Pro machines - that i
am trying to backup data from. i have the folders shared
out that i need to backup, and one box with a tape drive
on which i am using the winxp pro built in backup
utility. the problem is, that it fails on open files from
the shares with the error:

Warning: Unable to open <\\share\filename> - skipped.
Reason: The process cannot access the file because it is
being used by another process.

i have volume shadow copy enabled on all the boxes, but
still no go. ive been searching for an answer, but havent
seen anything difinitive - does VSC only work on local
drives, and not through shares? if so, does anyone have
any ideas for backing up the files (other than closing
them, as they are database files that need to stay open)?

Thanks!

I'm pretty sure that the problem is that you are doing it
across the network. The operation of the VSC likely only
works locally. You should try running that same backup
just on the machine with the tape drive and see if it
works without errors or skipping files. Do the other
machines have CD burners? You might consider that as an
alternative.

Good Luck

Yep - thats what it is. I tried running a backup on
the 'problem' files locally on the computer, and they
worked fine. no cd burners in the other boxes, but what i
guess i can do is run backups locally, but save them to a
share on the box with the tape drive, and then run a
backup on that box to save them to tape.

thanks for the reply!
