network adapters

i have a network adapter that should be recognised
automatically by win xp and it is but the when it tries
to loafd the drivers for it the data is invalid. this is
the same for the drivers from the website, the OS and the
one on the disk. what do i do?

i have tried all of the spare pci slots and even moved
devices from their pci slots to the others so i have
tried 5 in total and it doesn't make a difference
