Network Adapter Problem . . .

Hello,

Do you know what 1. 3Com EtherLink 10/100 PCI For Complete PC Management NIC
(3C905C-TX) - deterministic network enhancer and a WAN Miniport (IP) -
deterministic network enhancer are? They are found under Device Manager. I
am trying to figure out 1. why and how they are appearing and 2. do I need
them on my system being they caused me problems.

Computer specs: I have not added any pgm's, drivers etc. in days if not
weeks. I did reboot many time after the last installation.
W2K Pro (SP4 + all updates)
P3 733Mhz
768 RAM
40gig HD

Reason for post:
I just experienced a problem where my network adapter would not allow a
tcp/ip address to be assigned, dynamically or statically, to my NIC.
Received "Destination Host error when trying to ping IP.

What I was doing at time of problem:
I was using Lotus Notes v6 and noticed it stopped responding. I terminated
the process and could no longer open Lotus Notes because of an "unknown
error." From here, I rebooted my system and noticed the above problem found
under "Reason for post."

Device Manager:
I noticed that there was a [3Com EtherLink 10/100 PCI For Complete PC
Management NIC (3C905C-TX) - deterministic network enhancer] had a "?"
displayed on top of the adapter along with a WAN Miniport (IP) -
deterministic network enhancer.

Fix (Local Area Connection Properties):
I had to uncheck the box that corresponded to "Deterministic network
enhancer" in order for my NIC to obtain an IP and work.

Puzzled:
1. I looked at the Local Area Connection on another W2K Pro computer I have
an it did not display either of the fields I noted in "Device Manager"
above.
2. The W2K computer that had the problem has a lot more pgm's installed on
it so I am guessing "deterministic network enhancer" fields were added
because of a program I have installed but am not sure.
3. Prior to "Fix" I uninstalled the two found under "Device Manager" above
but they reappeared as I originally found them.

If you have an suggestions I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks for your time and any thoughts you may have!

The deterministic network enhancers are services installed by Cisco's VPN
client. It binds that service to each of your separate LAN devices. Not 100%
sure what they do though. You can uninstall them by uninstalling the Cisco
VPN client software.

Thanks for the information.

Unfortunately, I have never installed any Cisco software, let alone VPN
software. I will look into what I have installed recently to see what it
could have been. Off the top of my head, the last thing I installed was
Lotus Notes 6 from 5. I also installed and uninstalled Winproxy 5.
Otherwise, it has been probably well over a month since installing any other
pgm's with plenty of reboots since.

Thanks again.
