Network adapter missing after applying SP2

I have seen several posts on these lines in this newsgroup but no definitive
answer, so am posting again.

I applied SP2 to my Windows XP Pro installation, and thereafter the Network
Adapater is missing in Device Manager. It's not hidden - viewing hidden
deives shows the associated "Packet Scheduler Miniport" device but not the
main adapter entry. The Local Area Connection in Network Connections is
also missing. However, the network is working fine. Running Network
Troubleshooter gives a PASSED to the Network.

Un-installing SP2 did not fix the problem, so I restored the system from a
backup taken before SP2 was installed, and tried the process again. As soon
as SP2 was re-installed (no errors during install) the adaptors are missing
as before.

I have tried re-registering several DLLs (as suggested by someone) but that
did not work.

Which Vendor/model adapter. XP updates a number of drivers in
it's core SP2 package. I would suggest you get the latest XP driver
from the manufacturer's website or PC vendor and install prior to
the XP-SP2 upgrade.
I've seen a few "Quirks" as a result of SP2, but never a case where
both the Adapter and associated LAC disappear.
Also is the NIC a motherboard based chip or a PCI/USB unit ?

At the command prompt, run ipconfig - does your adapter appear in the
information?

It's a D-Link DFE-530TX. The D-link web site says the drivers are included
in Windows XP, and don't supply a separate driver. The NIC is of course a
PCI card.

Hmm, sounds maybe like a registry rights issue for your username perhaps?
Very wierd... are you on a network or standalone? XP SP2 has new group
policy options that sometimes get goofy results...

Tried running the Group Policy editor and seen if anything fishy is in
User/Admin/Network and it's subtrees?

The computer is a member of a Windows 2000 domain, with Group Policies
applied, and the adm files from Windows XP SP2 loaded. However, looking at
the Group Policy Editor for Users/Administrative Templates/Network nothing is
unusual, in fact nothing is configured.

Logging on to the local machine as administrator does not allow the network
adaptor to be seen either. Indeed, removing the computer from the domain
does not alter the situation.

Hmmm... what do you have in HKLM\Software\MS\WindowsNT\Current\NetworkCards?

How about CurrentControlSet\Control\Network? May be worth checking what
registry permissions are listed there...

Does this card have any kind of add-in driver tools that may be funky, such
as Intel ProSET or somesuch?

There are two entries for the missing adapter, plus one for the 1394 adapter
which is visible in Device Manager:

The permissions look OK - ie those for the D-Link are the same as the 1394
adapter. Not sure why there should be two entries though, as there's only
one physical card in the machine.

There's no special add-ins for this card - a plain vanilla installation
using Windows XP's native drivers.

FWIW
When my 530TX stopped working the leds were still on but no one was
home. I bought a elcheapo and it worked fine. The support is not in
XP so you have to install the driver from the disk or the site to be
sure the driver is the latest....
