NetMeeting Basics

I want to do a bit of experimentation with NetMeeting today and have lined
up a friend to try things with. Unfortunately, I'm having some trouble
getting started.

1. What directory am I supposed to be using? The only value in the dropdown
is "Microsoft Internet Directory" but I don't know how to put myself or my
friend in that directory. Also, when I try to connect to it, I get a message
saying that directory can't be found. Apparently, I need a different
directory but I have no idea what it is called or how to get myself and my
friend in it so that we can connect to one another.

2. What kind of computer does my friend need to have? I have XP Pro with SP2
on my main PC. I've also got a Win95 machine. I'm not sure what my friend's
PC is; does it matter? Does it have to be a Windows machine? Can I use
NetMeeting to communicate with a Mac or Linux machine?

3. I have DSL but am behind a router/firewall (SMC Barricade) so do I choose
DSL or LAN as my connection type?

4. I'm especially interested in trying Remote Desktop. From other posts on
this newsgroup, I gather that I must be running XP Pro or some of the
versions of Vista (not sure which ones) to use Remote Desktop. Does the
machine I communicate with have to be the same? Or can I control older
Windows machines and even Macs or Linux boxes?

5. The audio tuning part of the wizard says that it can't see my headset but
it works fine with Skype. What's the problem and what do I do about it?

Forgive my confusion but I have not seen these questions answered in any
documentation I've seen for NetMeeting.

You can read the basics of NetMeeting in the Resource Kit. That may answer a
lot of questions.

You can call IP to IP and not use the ILS servers which may or may not be
functional anymore any way.

Basically NetMeeting is not compatible with XP/Vista Remote Desktop. There
is a Remote Desktop Sharing (RDS) function in NetMeeting that worked well
for me in the past.

To run Remote Desktop the host PC must be running Vista Ultimate/Business or
XP Pro/MCE. There are Remote Desktop clients for older versions of Windows
and UNIX and Macs.

For help with NetMeeting I suggest posting to the news group I pointed you
to earlier. For Remote Desktop help post in this news group...
