Hello, have a win 2000 server with AD, the clients are all XP Pro.
Currently testing XP SP2 on 2 of my workstations, and noticed that if i send
a net send message to the domain, they workstations with SP2 dont get it
(because the firewalls built in in enabled and stops it - at least that what
i think). Once i get all the workstaions on SP2, is there a different tool
i could use to send network wide messages that will work or any other way
without disabling the firewall

Thanks
G

Leave the Firewall enabled.

Enable the F+P sharing exception ( it will be enabled for the local subnet
only );
and then start the messenger service, and set it to automatic.

You can set this up for all the machines by using Group Policy.

Where do i find this to enable via group policy?

Where do i find this to enable via group policy?

If you've never played with Group Policy before, here's a start:

Install XP-SP2 on an XP box on the domain;
Log in as a domain admin;
Start, run, mmc

File, Add/remove snapin,
Add...
Scroll down and select Group Policy, click Add
Wizard runs.
Group policy object: Browse...
In the browser, Domains/OUs tab.
Look In: your domain.
Choose Default Domain Policy, OK.
Finish.
Close Add Snapin.
OK to close Add/Remove snap-in dialog.

Now, you are at the console root, with the Default Domain Policy.

Firewall.

Make the settings.
The clients will pick them up in due course.
Or force them by entering 'gpupdate'
