.net Framework V3 question

I reviewed all my hidden updates and saw the .net 3 program in there.
I decided to go ahead and install it, although I've not had any
problems by not having it before. One thing concerns me... the next
day, it was asking ZoneAlarm for permission to connect to the
internet. Why would it need to connect? I'm not using any other
software than I have been and everything I use is working? I'm just
wondering why it needs to call home the next day after installation. I
had ZA block it and I'll leave it installed until I get some feedback
from you guys/gals. If I don't seem to get a good answer, I'll just
uninstall it and wait until something complains about needing it.
Thanks.

It's probably checking for updates. You can uninstall it if you want. It's
only used for specific applications and you never would need it until you
used one of them. Actually, it is the same with versions 1 and 2. You could
uninstall all and you probably would never need them. I uninstalled all on
my computer about a year ago.

It's a Microsoft procedure for developing software, no connection between
each version as far as I know. Basically it is something they have been
trying to sell for years but nobody seems to now exactly how much they are
used.

Anything written usig the .NET class library (which can
include such elementary things as message boxes) requires
..NET Framework to run. It includes the run time engine
for any .NET language, such as C#, and it can be thought
of as the virtual machine that runs the pseudo machine code
that is output by the various .NET language compilers. It's
like Sun's virtual Java machine - which you can't run Java
without. As I recall, Symantec's Ghost needs .NET Framework
to run. You might as well have it on your computer.

Everything these days wants axs to the Internet for updats/etc. Being
sort of old fashioned, I generally dont allow newly installed apps to do
so, however, my son always lets them do as they want, and I havn't had
to redo his XP2 OS for some time now, so it doesn't seem to be that bug
of an issue. It sort of seems like the sign of the times..

For example, I've been testing out:

http://www.boot-land.net/forums/index.php?autocom=Downloads

It too, wants to connect to the Internet as soon as you run it for the
first time. There is no harm in doing so with the above app. It's simply
how the app is designed to work...
